UnixSig Presentation

I spoke at UnixSig here at Langley yesterday about my use of SVN for maintaining common unix environments. Went well and I am putting my notes up here.

It’s a cool way to maintain your dotfiles and other unix-ish configuration among multiple hosts.

Call from Sprint

More information… they asked several questions:

– where is the store
– who was the sales person

They’re undecided wether they are going to allow me to return the unit… because they want to talk to the DM and the sales person to see if that’s how they were posturing the unit.

Weird that they can’t find the actual person from the sale records. He can’t promise anything will happen today, tomorrow or Friday.

Harsh Words for Professional Infosec Certification

Harsh Words for Professional Infosec Certification.

Very interesting article.  Says alot about the state of affairs.  How many people have just Security + and are doing system engineering?  I’ve seen this many times.

Sprint Phonecall

Wow .. so apparently people do listen ( and read the internet ). Just got a phone call from them…. Here’s the gist of the call:

– Sprint cannot put the old-style unlimited service on the new device ( expected )

– Sprint does *not* have *any* option other than paying overages for use past 5Gig a month.

– Sprint does not expect 4G service to be in the Tidewater Virginia area anytime soon.

Therefore, it’s rather useless to me as a network connection device given I typically use 20 gig or more per month.

I have asked if they can take the unit back once we’ve paid the remainder of the fees, and I will find a different service with better options. The gentleman said he’d call me back tomorrow .. so we will see.

Sprint Adjustment

So I got this missive today. This is definately a step in the right direction. They performed an adjustment, but didn’t change my account type on my new card to the unlimited access which matches the old card. This is still a problem for me. But I think I figured out where they went wrong.

I researched the plans on the site and guess what .. there is in-fact a Mobile Broadband Connection Plan that has 4G unlimited use .. but 5GB limit on 3G . This is what they gave me. The sales man told me I’d be completely unlimited ( not true ) .. and that 4G was coming to my area ( not apparently anytime soon ) and did not tell me I was limited to 5GB on the 3G network.

As a further issue, that unit doesn’t have a way to warn you you’re getting close to overage. If Sprint is still listening, this would be a *GREAT* option to offer your clients.. have a monthly limit on the unit that requires override to go past. Or an option on your site to warn w/in 20% and disable at 0% and require override by say logging in.

Perhaps i’ll write an apple program to do this… It’s so easy to blow past 5Gb when you have things like iTunes and others that d/l podcasts and such. That’s not their fault .. but it’d be nice to have a way to control that locally, from their AP or their site.

Anyway .. I think Sprint has at least tried to step up. Again, I really think I should get what I was told i’d get upon the purchase.

Nice Friendly Email

So just sent this email as a response to their ‘Customer Service Survey’… boy those things can be convenient some times…

o Whom it may Concern,

The phonecall that I had this morning with customer service was less than well received. I explained my situation:

– we had purchased a new 3G/4G WAP for use on our contract.

– we had NOT been told that the new device would transition from a ‘unlimited use’ to a ‘5 GB Limit use’ at time of purchase,

– we had been told that *both* devices would have the same unlimited plan.

Customer service told me that their hands were tied and all they could offer me was a $100 off my bill. This is completely unreasonable as what was offered as part of the sale is NOT what was delivered. I stated several times that I wanted these charges removed due to the lack of notice, and that I wanted the ‘connection cared data plan’ as was offered at the time of sale.

Customer service refused.

I have since started a campaign ‘www.sprinthasterriblecustomerservice.com’ and posted that url and the details as many places around the internet as I can find. If you take the time to ‘google’ my name, you will find that I have been around the internet for years, and am well known. I will use that exposure to my advantage. Further, I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau. the Consumer Protection Agency and my local ’10 on your side’ ( http://www.wavy.com/subindex/on_your_side ) news group which works to publicize incidents such as these. I have also filed with the FCC Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau and your executive management will soon see complaint #10-C00232458. You may expect that if this issue continues to exist, I will escalate the issue further and further.

I would like to ask that Sprint does the right thing here, removes the charges and resolves this dispute. You may contact me at any time at this email address, or by posting a comment at the above mentioned url. I look forward to discussing this issue and resolving it.
